An Open Letter

Dear Parent:

Thank you for expressing an interest in Genesis Reading Center. In doing so, you have declared yourself to be an active participant in your child’s education. As a concerned parent, you will be happy to learn about the effective methods of instruction that we use at Genesis.

Our initial approach to reading instruction is the Spalding method. It was because of this method that Genesis Reading Center was founded ten years ago. This method was developed by Romalda Bishop Spalding, and at the center of it all is her teaching philosophy. She stressed putting the child at the center of the learning process and insisted that he be entitled to a learning environment free from pain and anxiety. She wanted to reach all children regardless of any learning differences. She assured this by creating a multisensory method. This means that the child uses more than one sense simultaneously to send information to his brain. Mrs. Spalding had high expectations of her students, and she believed that students of all ability levels can be taught to meet their potential. As teachers of the Spalding method, we actively incorporate her philosophy into our work thereby stimulating children to go forward to become lifelong learners.

Of course, the Spalding method is just the beginning. After a child has reached a reading level of third grade or higher, it is necessary to develop fluency and comprehension proficiency.  This is where Reading Plus comes in. It is a computer program designed to make students read faster while still maintaining comprehension. Everytime the child obtains a comprehension score of 70% or higher, his reading rate is increased. The children at Genesis get excited when they see how far they have come and where their scores rank when compared to national norms.

Our enthusiasm continues with the advent of Play Attention. We are excited to be among the first in Louisiana to introduce a program which makes an inability to focus and concentrate a thing of the past for many children. Talk about space age technology!

Play Attention uses special games that don't require a joystick to play, instead working on brainpower. When a person concentrates, certain brainwaves are produced that indicate that they're paying attention. The sensors inside the Play Attention helmet read these brainwaves and use them to develop better concentration and focus.

Our class sizes are small, never more than ten students. We offer these because certain subjects are better taught in small groups than on a one-to-one basis. Examples of this are our Spalding phonics classes, study skills workshops, and ESL classes.

We do, of course, offer tutoring as well. Our tutors are highly qualified and proficient in what they teach and have personal pride in seeing their students achieve; indeed, they love what they do.

Wow! What a long letter!  Forgive me for being so long winded;

I had so much to say and could still go on for hours. Thank you again for your interest in Genesis Reading Center. We hope your child will become our next lifelong learner who writes to read, reads to learn, and shouts to the world that he did it at Genesis Reading Center.

Sincerely,

Debbie Drago
Director/President
