Fluency & Comprehension

“We were told not to expect anything more than C’s from our daughter. We are proud to say that she has made the principal's honor roll twice!”

We now offer Reading Plus, a computer program which results in greater reading efficiency. First, using goggles called the Visagraph, we test a student to determine how efficiently his or her eyes move across the page. With the Visagraph, we know exactly how your child compares with the reading norms of his or her peers. How fast does he read at a comprehension level of 70% or higher? How many times do his eyes stop and for how long? Does he have trouble keeping his place? The results are graphed, a reading level is determined, and a program is tailored to meet each student’s needs. Nearly everyone can benefit from Reading Plus.

Skills covered include:

Guided Reading (Level 1–12)

Develops fluency (efficiency) in the most basic reading processes (visual/functional, perceptual and information processing) resulting in ease and comfort, adequate reading rates, and improved comprehension. Timed and left-to-right scanned reading improves the subliminal reading capabilities that comprise the Fundamental Reading Process.

Reading Around Words (Level 4–12)

Expands word knowledge through structured contextual analysis strategies. Students learn to use these contextual clues: Synonym/antonym, definition, comparison/contrast and interpretation/application to develop word meaning and use.

Comprehension Power (Level 1–12)
Career/Comprehension Awareness (Level 8–12)

Improves comprehension and study skill strategies through preview skimming and comprehensive reading practice. Timed reading of selections (in segments followed by questions) builds reading rates, consolidates understanding, and develops accelerated and thorough reading competency. Twenty-five major comprehension skills in the areas of Literal Understanding, Interpretation, Analysis, Evaluation and Appreciation are treated in the comprehension building questions.

CLOZE-PLUS (Level 1–8)

Develops comprehension skills and vocabulary power through structured cloze and contextual analysis strategies. Students complete meaning (supply missing words) or select proper vocabulary meaning and use through the use of contextual clues involving synonyms, antonyms, association, categorization, time/order, signal words, phrases, pronoun referents, similarities/differences, conclusion, and definition.
